Apple released a statement yesterday saying he "died peacefully today surrounded by his family."
"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being." Jobs is widely regarded as the most important figure in the history of personal computers, and transformed the way consumers interacted with technology. In recent years Apple has become the world's most valuable tech company with a $350bn market value, driven by products largely associated with Jobs, including iconic devices the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad. He once described his philosophy as "the intersection of art and technology." His influence was summed up by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who said: "The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come."

Tributes flooded in after the announcement of Apple pioneer Steve Jobs’ death. Tim Cook, who recently took over as Apple CEO from Jobs, said: “We will honour his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much." US president Barack Obama said Jobs was “among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it." Disney CEO Robert Iger said: "Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started." Google co-founder Sergey Brin wrote “From the earliest days of Google, whenever Larry [Page] and I sought inspiration or vision and leadership, we need to look no farther than Cupertino. Steve, your passion for excellence is felt by anyone who has ever touched an Apple product (including the macbook I am writing this on right now). Obituaries noted the extraordinarily positive impact Steve Jobs had on the fortunes of the company he founded. After being fired from Apple in 1985 after his early successes, Jobs returned in 1997 to a company with $7.1bn annual revenue. He leaves Apple with $65.2bn annual revenues, and at the centre of the computer industry having drifted to the margins in his absence.
