Lives Remembered The Times 15th August 2017
Derek Wyatt writes:
I was researching a film on Basil D'Oliveira in 1991 and went to see Doug Insole (Obituary, August8) at Essex CC's HQ.
I told him that Basil had been beaten as a teenager by white police and still had the marks on his back. Donald Woods had told me that he ahd been speaking at a white only cricket club dinner in East London when it was interrupted by the news that "Dolly" had been selected. Its members promptly set the pavilion on fire in disgust.
As Doug heard these stories, tears could be seen slowly falling down his cheek. I do not think he ever came to terms with the D'Oliveira Affair.
