The lovely Frank Keating died yesterday aged 75. The Guardian has an Obit and another piece by his dear friend Matthew Engel.
I came to know Frank in the 1980s and visited him at his home near Hereford.
When he was pacing up and down in the maternity unit of Hereford hospital (aged 50) another woman of a similar age asked him: "Is this your first?" To which he replied it was. She then went into raptures about what it was like being a grandparent. He didn't have the heart to tell her it was his first child. I sent him a telegram: Keating 50-1.
It was such a shame no-one commissioned his autobiography perhaps Matthew will write a biography.
