The first job of any Chancellor of The Exchequer is to reform the tax system from top to bottom. When thousands of lawyers are in league with thousands of accountants to make sure their clients pay no tax or move it abroad with impunity or invest in forests or whatever, something is sick in the system. The rich become richer because they can afford a bevy of advisers which tell them to set up Trusts and the like. At HMR&C there are simply not enough staff with the expertise to track these people and companies down and when they do - like Vodafone - they reach an "accommodation" which is absurd.
The Budget is always a smoke and mirror exercise. You give something away with your left hand and take it back with your right.
Politicians ask why the electorate has given up on voting. Well one of the reasons is that they are treated like morons by the political class.
