I went to see the film Anna Karenina starring Keira Knightley, Jude Law & Aaron Taylor-Johnson last night at the Odeon, Leicester Square. Leo Tolstoy wrote the novel back in 1877. I read it 35 years ago and thought at the time it was the finest book I had read. I was spell-bound by the fact that a man had seemingly been able to reach inside a woman's mind with such knowledge and intimacy.
I tired watching the endless scene changes though some were quite amusing but the jokes and half dances could not be sustained. Actually, I thought shooting it indoors was a mistake and affected Tom Stoppard's script. I also became irritated with Dario Marianelli's music. There was so much of it. It felt as if Joe Wright (Director) had lost confidence in parts of the final edit.
I loved Ms Knightley as Anna; she has developed into a fine actress; she was compulsive viewing dressed as she was in the most fantastic costumes. Aaron T-J played Vronsky, Anna's lover. I thought he was the weakest; he kept reminding me of David Hemmings in Blow Up.
Overall, I was disappointed. There's a shock.......
