Yesterday evening, we went to see 12 Years a Slave at The Barbican (packed).
I am not sure there was anything that was surprising about the story line itself although the rape scene caused a number of women to leave the cinema. The script, direction and acting was top of the range and sure it will attract a bounty of prizes but it did not in the end push the boundaries of film making.
In a month which has already seen Mandela's death and biopic, the inquest to the quite appalling case of the shooting of Mark Duggan (bring on the judicial review) and now 12Years, it is a fact that we still treat many of our citizens as third class. Austerity or not, how we treat our people matters most whatever the century.
